Hall of Fame Award 2017
The Fiddler’s Green Festival prestigious Hall of Fame Award was hand carved by local artist Jim Sherry. The award is given each year to an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to Irish Music and Tradition.
Previous winners include such acts as The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers, Altan and our very own Sands Family.
HALL OF FAME – Fri 28th July – 8pm – St Bronaghs Club Rooms
The recipient of this highly prestigious award is fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes.
Martin has been described as being possibly the most important individual musician in Ireland at the present time. Steeped in the music of his native East Clare, Martin, at the age of thirteen, was touring with the revered Tulla Ceili Band, under the leadership of his father, P.J. Hayes.
In addition to his father, mighty fiddlers such as Paddy Canny, Martin Rochford, Francie Donnellan, Vincent Griffin and Martin Woods were a great influence on Martin as he developed. He absorbed the music of his home place and intuitively understood what the older players were trying to express. Since then Martin has gone on to have a magnificent career, immersing himself in a variety of musical styles in America, but ultimately being drawn back to the music of his roots, but with new insights and a deeper confidence.
Martin Hayes is truly a master of the fiddle, an individual stylist of the highest order, his playing is characterised by mesmeric rhythm, exquisite tone and tantalisingly slow release of melody.
It has been said that Martin redefines your concept of excellence and reveals levels of beauty and artistry not previously thought possible. A genuinely worthy recipient of our 2017 Hall of Fame Award, Martin Hayes.
