Dan White’s Dander
A wonderful walk that has been the opening event of the festival for a number of years. Starting at Dan Whites Cottage at the top of the Kilfeaghan Road we recreate the journey this bachelor shepherd used to take a few days a week on his visits to Rostrevor. We follow the course of the Watergap River up the mountain before turning west for the final steep climb to the Mast on Slieve Martin. After a rest we then head down to Cloughmor and then on to Fiddlers Green to meet up with the large crowd who have gathered there for the outdoor concert and picnic.
2 ½ hours | Distance 8 km | Highest Point 450 m | Moderate ability | Bus Leaves Rostrevor Square at 10am
Good walking boots or trail runners are highly recommended. If you are not an experienced walker then walking poles would be very useful. You should also wear waterproof clothing and carry a good waterproof jacket. Please check forecast in advance to find out conditions for each day.
It is extremely important that you also carry some drinking water, a packed lunch and some high energy snacks.
As we will be often crossing private land with livestock on them dogs are not allowed, except on the Heritage trail and wind up/ wind down walk. We operate a strictly “leave no trace” policy. All walks are guided and there will only be a small charge to cover the cost of buses as required. Buses will be from the Square outside festival office. Please note times of each walk.
